Title

Electromagnet Strength

Problem Scenario

In my experiment i am going to see if the wire length has an effect on the strength of an electromagnet.

Broad Question

Can the strength of an electromagnet change?

Specific Question

Does wire length effect electromagnet strength?

Hypothesis

I believe the longer the wire is the stronger the electromagnet will be.

Variables

Independent Variable: Wire length

Dependent Variable: Strength of electromagnet

Variables That Need To Be Controlled: Battery, Bolt, Paper clip

Vocabulary List That Needs Explanation

Electromagnet-magnetism developed by a current of electricity

General Plan

In my experiment i am planning on testing to see if the wire length effects the strength of an electromagnet. I will get different wire lengths and test each length on an electromagnet. I will see how many paper clips it will picks up with each different wire length.

Potential Problems And Solutions

Some problems that might happen during the experiment. First the battery might die, if it does i will get a new battery. Another problem is the wire might break, if that happens i will get new wire and re-build it. The last problem is the electromagnet doesn't work, if it doesn't work i will make a new one.

Safety Or Environmental Concerns

Some safety or environmental concerns. I could get electrocuted/shocked.

Detailed Procedure

  1. Get tape, bolt, wire 20 40 60 80 100 (cm), battery (9 volt) and paper clips (large)
  2. Rap the wire around the bolt, then tape it in place
  3. Leave 10cm of both ends of wire off bolt to connect the battery to
  4. Get the paper clips in a pile
  5. Attach the battery to each end of wire
  6. Test the magnet and see how many paper clips it picks up and record
  7. Take battery off and wire
  8. Re-build the electromagnet with a different wire length
  9. Test and record again
  10. Repeat the process until all wire lengths are tested

Results

The shorter thye wire was the weaker the electromagnet was, and the longer the wire was the stronger it was.

Conclusion

The Electromagnet was stronger when it had more wire.

Discussion

In my experiment the longer the wire was the stronger the electromagnet was, the shorter it was the weaker it was. I was able to answer the experiment question and my hypothisis was correct. My prdiction graph was a few paper clips off. I had no problems doing my experiment and everything went fine. If i did the experiment again i would of tested each wire length more times. My experiment could help people if they were building an electromagnet, they would no what length wire to use for how much they are lifting up with it.

Benefit to Community and/or Science

My experiment would be beneficial to the community or science if someone needed to build an electromagnet and needed to know if they should use a longer or shorter wire. That is the only way it would help people in our community and science.

Background Research

My experiment was relatively easy with my current knowledge. I had to do some research on exactly how to build the electromagnet. But for the most part i knew how to build one. Building the electromagnet was easy and wasn't much work. I had to buy a few things like wire and paper clips. Recording the information was also very easy i just wrote down how many paper clips the electromagnet picked up and wrote it down on a chart. My prediction graph was pretty accurate, but was off by a few paper clips on some predictions.
During the experiment i took pictures and used the wiki site to put down information. Building the electromagnet took about five minutes and the actual experiment took about 1/2 hour to complete. After the experiment i typed my information down on the wiki site.

Abstract

In my experiment i was seeing if the length of wire effects the strength of an electromagnet. My hypothesis states that the longer the wire is the stronger the electromagnet is. I tested 5 different lengths, 20 40 60 80 100 cm. My experiment was very easy and i didn't have any trouble. As i was doing my experiment i was putting my information on the wiki site.
